Basic Information
Name: Aidan Bao
--Nickname: Alias: Hawkeye
Gender: Male
Age: 22 (born 149 AG)
Personality:
If you were to ask Aidan what kind of man he was, his first instinctive response would be "who are you and why are you talking to me?" He'd then proceed to laugh and buy you a drink. A man who tries to enjoy life as much as possible (he strongly believes his will be short) he laughs, dances, and enjoys himself whenever possible. A charmer with a winning smile, it's his love of life and others that lead him to want to serve, the same way his mother and uncle had. There are few men more willing to put their life on the line for others as he is. Despite being a nonbender he isn't one who stands down easily, especially when innocents are in danger. When given the command he can be ready at a moment's notice to fight to protect the citizens of the Republic from all enemies. A military man through and through, the notions of honor, duty, respect, and loyalty are ingrained into his very soul. This doesn't mean he'll wear his uniform properly (he rarely does) and that he won't grumble at the little idiocies that come with military life, but he honestly can't see himself anywhere else.
Aidan is used to being the underdog all his life in a world run by benders, and in a military commanded by benders, he's become rather resourceful and able to find a way to persevere even in the most dire of situations. It's a trait that's saved him more times than he can count especially when fighting those who can control the very elements against him. However he doesn't hate benders, he simply understands that is the way the world is and has adapted accordingly. A very loyal man he takes the oath he swore to the United Forces seriously. He knows his place and will often follow orders even when they contradict his own moral and ethical code. This is difficult when he has a very strong sense of what is right and what is wrong, and often finds it difficult to "see the grey" in life. He can be stubborn when it comes to changing his beliefs about something (and, stubborn in general) but when proven wrong he doesn't dwell on it. When it comes to the fairer sex it is one of his bigger vices. Knowing he'll usually be gone in the morning to go on some mission or another, with the fairer sex he focuses on having as much fun as possible with little thought of the future. Occasionally his conscience nags him about that, though he buries that with a drink or two.
On a dorkier side, he absolutely adores chess. The simple joy and ease of the tactics in the game are child's play compared to the operations he's been a part of since the age of 17. He reads old manuals and stories of great battles with interest, attempting to ween any ounce of knowledge from them that he hasn't learned before. The stack of books in his room are all worn, scribbled in, and very clearly read multiple times. When he does read he has an intense focus and loses all track of time and surroundings, reading from dawn till dusk and it would take a heavy bombardment to break his concentration. A heavy chain-smoker, it isn't uncommon for him to go through a pack a day, and operations that don't allow him to smoke often find him on edge. That being said, since he's been running as long as he can remember, he can still run a 20 minute three mile run, and has tried to quit before but finds that his nerves are far too frayed without the tobacco. A flask of scotch is never far from his hand either, as it fits in a special pocket in his jacket. It's his "lucky flask," as it's the one memento from his father he still has after losing him so many years ago. Though he's smart enough to know getting drunk while on duty is an offense punishable by several days of "bread and water" in the brig, he doesn't drink to the extent that will inhibit him from his duties (unless, of course, he's off duty).
To be perfectly frank he doesn't quite know what to make of the whole Harmonic Convergence thing. He never had any connection to the spirits before, and having them as neighbors now (a giant tree grew next to the barracks, and regularly harass him) is unsettling. If there was a way he, and other nonbenders, could kick them all back to the spirit world where they belonged he'd sign up in a heartbeat. If one more of those bastards came up to knock on his window at night, again, he may just have a mild conniption.
Appearance:
Aidan is not a particularly intimidating soldier. Standing 5'10", 165lbs, he has a lean and athletic build better suited for running, dodging, and hiding instead of a straight up brawl. Not that he can't (or, won't) fight, he just prefers to fight at a distance. His bright yellow eyes suggest he has some fire nation in him, though no one is particularly sure where his blonde hair comes from (or where his father's blonde hair came from). His hair, when unbraided, is long and falls to just above the middle of his back. His bangs hang down the side of his face, and are parted in such a way to prevent them from falling onto his face when in combat. Whenever he wears his uniform his hair is braided properly, such as to present at least somewhat of a professional appearance to his superiors.
Aidan can typically be seen sporting one of three main outfits. The first is, naturally, his blue, fitted military uniform. His uniform is blue due to the fact that he is a member of the United Forces Special Operations, though the only time he wears it properly is whenever there's a barracks inspection. More often than not he wears the jacket unbuttoned, wearing a black t-shirt instead of the light blue button down shirt he's supposed to wear. His black boots, however, are always impeccably shined and are a major point of pride. When going out on the town after hours he actually dresses rather well. He wears a white, button down shirt with the top two buttons unbuttoned and a brown vest. His black pants are comfortable, and he wears a set of brown boots. When conducting more secretive operations, he typically sports a set of khaki heavy duty pants (with knees reinforced), a grey t-shirt, heavy black boots and a black leather jacket. When on missions he also wears a bandoleer with clips containing crossbow bolts, along with a belt that has ever more crossbow bolts, a canteen, a small first aid kit, and a small set of binoculars.
There are three things he is never seen without. One is his Zippo lighter, given to him by his commander upon joining the United Forces Special Operations with a Hawk etched into the casing. The other is a small steel case that contains his cigarettes (and keeps them dry, in case he falls into the water). Finally is his flask, always in a pocket just over his chest. Take off most his clothes, and you'll see the scars of a man who has been to hell and back. There are burn scars all along his left side from training accidents. He has small scars along his chest and back. Finally, he bears a large tattoo of a hawk on his upper back, after his callsign.

Character Background
History:
- History:
In the sleepy, seaside village of Harbor Town, few things were more exciting than the arrival of a blonde haired stranger. What his purpose was no one knows but he claimed he was a simple fisherman, looking to settle down. One day, this man nearly drowned in a storm, saved by a beautiful coast guardswoman named Alina. In time the two were wed, and Aidan was born. This is the extent of the story Aidan knows of them anyway, as not long after his birth the man was killed in a barfight, and his mother died not three years later while trying to rescue another fishing boat during one particularly hazardous storm. The young Aidan, orphaned and alone, would instead be raised by his uncle, Commander Jan Vin of the United Forces.
Growing up on ships and bases his entire life, Aidan was constantly surrounded by soldiers. The military was his entire life as his uncle didn’t really have the time, or the expertise, to raise the child in a conventional manner. Instead his uncle taught him the virtues of a man who would be of great service to the United Forces. While never getting very good at the sheer strengthening exercises, young Aidan was always quick on his feet. Taught how to deal with all sorts of bending through dodging, ambushing, and generally being as far away from the threat as possible and deal with it from a distance. Should fighting turn hand to hand, he was taught how to fight in a manner that would allow his escape, to create as much distance as possible between himself and his target. Aidan was taught the values of loyalty, honor, duty to his Republic and to protect the innocent. His uncle had a phrase that Aidan learned to internalize rather quickly. “There are three kinds of people on this world, sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. Most are sheep, simply trying to live their daily lives. There are wolves in the shadows, which always prey on the sheep. Sheepdogs look like wolves, can fight like wolves, and bear the same sharp teeth, though they devote their lives to defending those who cannot defend themselves from the wolves. Remember what you are, always. A sheepdog.” His uncle would die living those words while taking down a pirate base, leaving Aidan alone at 15.
For two years, Aidan tried to join the army but to no avail. Not allowed to live on base any further, he traveled up and down the United Republic, where he would mainly shine shoes to make a living, calling any place he rested his head "home". Every time he entered a new town he would try to join at the local recruitment office, and each time sent back, being told he was “too young.” Finally, at 17, Aidan tried in his home town of Harbor Town to join the United Forces. The recruiter, recognizing the orphan who entered his office as "Alina's kid", took pity on him and helped him lie on his recruitment forms, making him “18,” and sent him to basic training. There he excelled and was soon picked up by men in blue uniforms, stating they wanted him for “special assignment.” Soon after he was sent to special schools where he learned self-reliance, became one of the best shots with a crossbow in the United Forces, and became a part of Special Operations, codenamed “Hawkeye.” Though that nearly wasn’t the case. In one of the early training accidents Aidan was nearly incinerated when a firebender got a bit too overzealous in the fighting. He survived, but he still bear the marks on his arm and leg to this day.
His first few assignments were relatively simple. Stopping a bandit group here, hunting and tracking some threat or another. But when the equalists started to build in strength Aidan had a new assignment. Infiltrate them and report back to UF command on the goings on of Ammon and his Equalists. After earning their trust, he learned of the Equalist plot to overtake the city and the council Aidan returned to his unit and they quickly went underground, preparing to fight. During the assault his team was one of the few forces loyal to the council to survive, and consistently harassed Equalist supplies and forces until the Avatar was finally able to bring Ammon down.
For his work, Aidan was promoted to Corporal, and set about helping train the next batch of crossbowmen for the United Forces when a new assignment came in. A secret assignment, one which if the president ever discovered it would get him and his team possibly dishonorably discharged. The United Forces needed information on the situation in the South Pole, but the President had explicitly banned all military operations in aid of either side. Disguising themselves as traders they snuck into the capital city of the South Pole and began to get to work. Reporting back to General Iroh on the oppression of the Southern Water tribe, sabotaging Northern supply depots, aiding the resistance, all sorts of missions that thankfully the President never found out about. After the events of the Harmonic Convergence Aidan returned to the Capital City, the now Sergeant Aidan Bao helps the United Forces relief efforts and attempting to keep the Republic safe. To say he's not happy with his new neighbors is something of a mild understatement, though he doesn't really know what else to do aside from just ignore the spirits and try to go on with his life.

“Hawkeye, report in. Do you see them?”
“Aye, I got them in my sights, permission to engage?”
“Not yet. We’re not in position.”
Aidan grimaced as he sat in a bell tower with the crossbow pointed down at the square below. The Equalists had set up a large checkpoint and begun weeding out the benders from the non-benders. He couldn’t stand it, just sitting there waiting as the sad sight below unfolded in front of him. Mothers crying out as their child is ripped from their arms, desperate men trying to wield what element they knew before being pinned to the ground and bound and gagged. It sickened him watching these so called “equalists” enforcing their rule through force and fear. They didn’t want ‘equality’ they wanted superiority for themselves. They wanted power, a blind man could see that, and they were simply trying to take the greatest threat to their future power out. The fact that he had had to hide out amongst their number for even a day still sickened him.
“Hawkeye, we’re in position.”
“Took you long enough Team leader.” Aidan grinned, aiming at the man shouting commands at civilians and placing his fingers on the lever. Taking a slow, easy breath, he exhaled and lined up the cross hairs of his crossbow. Just as the equalist was shouting through his megaphone at his soldiers Aidan pulled the trigger. The bolt flew straight and true through the air and struck the man with the megaphone in the neck. As the blood spurt forth from the man’s neck Aidan re-loaded his crossbow and fired again, striking the shoulder of the man next to the commander. Soon, the rest of his team charged in with a combination of fire, water, and earth, bringing the equalist tank to the ground and attempting to evacuate the civilians. Aidan kept up the fire, shooting from his perch at the masked men who charged at his comrades. As he stopped to reload, he looked up to see one of Ammon’s airships turning towards the square.
“Sir, we need to wrap this up. Big boys are coming down.”
“Roger Hawkeye. Pack up and bug out, we’ll rendezvous at safehouse F.”
“Aye aye sir.” Pressing a button on the stock of his crossbow, the bow collapsed into it and he slung it back over his back. His job for now was done. The civilians all escaped into the alleys and tunnels of the city, with the operatives escaping not long after. Running down the stairs, Aidan wondered just how much longer they could keep up open resistance like this. The enemy was better armed, better organized, and they had already defeated the first force try to retake the city. The Avatar better figure out something soon…
